Farali khichdi and farali bhel are tasty and quick vrat recipes. Farali khichdi is made with sweet potatoes and flavored with peanuts, chillies, cumin and curry leaves. This khichdi doesn’t use a lot of spices and that’s because it’s often made during the fasting season. farali bhel is extremely easy to make and surely satisfies your cravings for a delicious snack along with Tea or Coffee.  Do try this!

The key to making tasty farali khichdi and farali bhel at home are

For farali khichdi 

  • Firstly, grate sweet potato with a big hole grater. Do not grate it with a small hole grater, otherwise, khichdi become mashy after cooking it.
  • Secondly, crushed peanut powder absorbs all moisture from khichdi and also gives a nutty flavor to khichdi.
  • Lastly, farali khichdi tastes great when prepared with desi ghee.

For farali bhel

  • Firstly, for bhel I made green chutney, which is slightly spicy, sweet and sour. In bhel adjust the amount of green chutney, depending on the spice level,
  • Secondly, adding boiled sweet potato is optional and you can skip it or replace it with potatoes.
  • Farali bhel tastes great when prepared spicy and crunchy as served on the streets of India.

Ingredients
 

For farali khichdi

  • 500 grm sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup roasted peanuts
  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp white sesame seeds
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Water to sprinkle
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Some coriander leaves

For farali bhel

    For green chutney

    • 1 cup coriander leaves
    • ¼ cup mint leaves
    • 10-12 curry leaves
    • 3-4 green chilli
    • 1 tbsp raw mango
    • 1 tbsp peanuts
    • Salt to taste
    • ½ tsp roasted cumin powder
    • 1 tsp sugar
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • ¼ cup cold water to grind chutney

    For bhel

    • ½ cup boiled sweet potatoes
    • ½ cup chopped tomatoes - optional
    • 3 tbsp raw mango pieces
    • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
    • 2 tsp green chutney or according to your taste
    • ½ tsp cumin powder
    • Salt to taste
    • 1 cup farali chevdo
    • 1 tsp lemon juice
    • Some coriander leaves

    Instructions

    Making Farali khichdi

    • Peel the skin of sweet potatoes and grate it with a big hole grater.
    • Wash sweet potato strips with water to remove its starch. Then sieve water from it and dry it.
    • Then in a mortal-pestal, add peanut and crushed it into coarse powder. Keep it aside.
    • In a pan, add ghee, cumin seeds, white sesame seeds and curry leaves. sauté it.
    • Now, add chopped green chilli and sauté it.
    • Then add grated sweet potatoes and salt. mix well.
    • Sprinkle some water. Cover and cook khichdi on low-medium flame for 5-7 minutes or till sweet potatoes become completely cooked.
    • Now add, crushed peanuts, black pepper, sugar and lemon juice. Mix well.
    • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

    Making farali bhel

    • In a mixture jar, add coriander leaves, mint leaves, curry leaves, green chilli, raw mango pieces, peanuts, salt, roasted cumin powder, sugar and lemon juice. Grind it.
    • Green chutney is ready. keep it aside.
    • now, in a mixing bowl, add boiled sweet potato pieces, tomato pieces, raw mango pieces, pomegranate seeds, green chutney, cumin powder, salt, farali chevdo, lemon juice and coriander leaves. mix well.
    • Farali bhel is ready. serve immediately.

    Notes

    Farali khichdi
    • grate sweet potato with big hole grater.
    • crush peanut coarsely, do not make its fine powder.
    • ghee gives good flavor and taste of khichdi.
    • do not add more water to cook sweet potatoes, just sprinkle some water.
    • cook khichdi on low-medium flame.
    Farali bhel
    • Farali bhel tastes great when prepared spicy and crunchy.
    • Serve farali bhel immediately, otherwise, it will become soggy.
