lachko bhel or geeli bhel is a tasty chatpata snack made from bhel mix, chopped veggies, and chaat chutneys. It tastes spicy, sour, and slightly sweet, and is loved by all kinds of age groups. In this recipe I share market-style bhelmix and chat chutney recipes, both are easy to make with all available ingredients in your kitchen. do try this!
The key to making tasty lachko bhel (geeli bhel) at home are
- Firstly, I would heavily recommend using crisp and fresh murmura. So dry roast murmura on a low medium flame for about 5 mins to make it crisp.
- Bhel mix is easy to make with puffed rice, peanut, roasted chana dal, fried poha, papadi, sev, and regular masala. You can also store it in an air-tight container for months.
- Chat chutneys are easy to make also the consistency of chutney should be liquid, so it will easily absorb into bhelmix.
- Lastly, once the lachko bhel is made, it has to be served immediately.

Ingredients
For bhel mix
- 250 grm murmura
- ½ cup peanuts
- ½ cup roasted chana dal
- 1 cup thick poha
- ¼ cup oil
- ½ tsp hing
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- ½ cup chana namkeen
- 12-15 papdi
- ½ cup fried boondi
- 2 cup sev
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp dry mango powder
- 5 tbsp powder sugar
For khatti meethi imli chutney
- 100 grm tamarind - imli soaked into 2 cup hot water
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- Pinch of hing
- 1 cup jaggery
- ½ cup mishri - sakar
- Salt to taste
- ¼ tsp black salt
- 1 tsp roasted cumin powder
- ½ tsp red chilli powder
- ½ tsp ginger powder
- ½ tsp fennel seeds powder
- 1 tbsp melon seeds
For green chutney
- 1 cup fresh coriander leaves
- 1 tbsp chopped raw mango pieces
- 1 inch ginger
- 2 green chilli
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp chaat masala
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tbsp roasted chana dal
- Salt to taste
- 4-5 ice cubes or cold water
For garlic chutney
- 10-12 kashmiri red chilli soaked into hot water
- 9-10 garlic cloves
- 1 tsp black salt
- 1 tsp jeera powder
- Salt to taste
- ¼ cup water
Assembling lachko bhel
- Bhel mix
- Chopped onion
- Chopped tomatoes
- Chopped raw mango pieces
- Boiled potato pieces
- Chopped green chilli
- Chat masala
- Garlic chutney
- Green chutney
- Khatti meethi imli ki chutney
- ½ lemon juice
- Coriander leaves
- Garnish with raw mango pieces - coriander leaves, sev
Instructions
Making bhel mix
- In a pan, add murmrua and dry roast it on low-medium flame. then add into a mixing bowl.
- Now heat oil in a pan, take peanuts in a sieve, and immerse the sieve in the oil. Fry the peanuts till they are light brown. Add fried peanuts into the mixing bowl.
- Then fry roasted chana dal and thick poha into hot oil and add them to mixing bowl.
- Now in a bowl, heat 4 tbsp oil and switch off the gas. Then add hing, turmeric powder, curry leaves, and red chili powder. Sauté it
- Then add tempering into the mixing bowl and mix well.
- Now add chana namkeen, papdi, fried boondi and sev.
- Also add salt, dry mango powder, and powder sugar. mix well.
- Bhel mix is ready. Store it in air-tight container.
For khatti meethi imli chutney
- Soaked 100 grm tamarind into 2 cups of hot water.
- When tamarind is soaked properly, add into mixture jar and grind it. sieve tamarind pulp and keep it aside.
- Now in a pan, add oil, jeera, and hing. Sauté it.
- Add tamarind pulp and mix well.
- Then add jaggery and mishri (sakar). Mix well and cook on low flame till it completely dissolves.
- Now add salt, black salt, cumin powder, dry ginger powder, red chili powder and saunf powder. Mix well.
- Switch off and cool down the chutney mixture.
- Add 1 tbsp watermelon seeds and mix well.
- Khatti meethi Tamarind chutney is ready.
Making green chutney
- In a mixing jar, add green coriander leaves, raw mango pieces, green chili, ginger, cumin seeds, chaat masala, lemon juice, sugar, roasted chana dal, salt, and ice cubes.
- grind it into a smooth paste.
- Green chutney is ready.
Making garlic chutney
- In a mixture jar, add 10-12 soaked kashmiri red chili, garlic cloves, black salt, jeera powder, salt, and water
- Garlic chutney is ready.
Assembling lachko bhel
- In a deep container, make a layer of bhel mix, chopped onion, chopped tomatoes, raw mango pieces, boiled potatoes, chopped green chili, chat masala, garlic chutney, green chutney, and tamarind chutney. (refer to video)
- Now make another layer as above.
- Cover the container with a lid and shake.
- Lachko bhel is ready, serve immediately.
Notes
- roast murmura on medium flame till it becomes crispy.
- you can fry soaked and dry chana dal instead of roasted chana dal.
- amchur powder and sugar (mishri) powder gives chatpata flavor to bhel mix.
- addition of some mishri (sakar) gives halwai style taste to imli chutney.
- ice cubes or cold water helps to retain the green color of the chutney while green chutney grinding it.
- lachko bhel tastes great when it is served spicy, sour, and slightly sweet.
